New Britain Provides Quality of Life New Britain is only 10 miles from Hartford, and it is home to Central Connecticut State University and Charter Oak State College. The city's official nickname is Hardware City because of its history as a manufacturing center and as the headquarters of Stanley Black & Decker. There are many open spaces, including Central Park in the middle of downtown, which make the city a very livable environment. The town is in the process of expanding and transforming its downtown into a town square where people can congregate and frequent food trucks and street vendors. New Britain's streets have many trees adorning the sides of the streets and one or two streams meander through the town.
